1. Pilot Sunglasses – Ray-Ban Aviator Classic
Most importantly when buying sunglasses for pilots is that they are NOT polarised! You don’t necessarily need an expensive brand, but they must protect the eyes against the UV. Ever since I bought my first Aviator sunglasses from Ray Ban, I love the brand and have never changed brands since!
2. Pilot Headset – Bose A20 Aviation Headset
Yes, I know they are expensive…. but they are THE BEST! They have very good Noise Cancelling which really helps in the cockpit of both small and big airplanes! After flying years with other headsets, flying with the Bose A20 was really a relief, it felt so much more peaceful without all the noise of the engines, plus they are very lightweight and made of nice material!
3. Flight Bag – Design4Pilots Daily Pilot Bag
This bag is really useful to bring on a daily flight as it has the perfect size to bring all documents, pens, sunglasses and other items that you need on a daily flight! Plus it fits in even the tiniest cockpits!
4. Pilot Jacket – Design4Pilots Aviation Jacket – Waterproof and Windproof
This jacket is very nice as it’s waterproof and windproof, it has many useful pockets and includes a pocket with a yellow vest (hi-vis) for walk-arounds!
It’s important to take care of your ears, especially when working near loud noise! I wear these earplugs when doing the walk-around (exterior inspection) as there are many engines and APU’s around that make a lot of noise!
6. Kneeboard – Standard or with iPad holder
During flight training we use a kneeboard (a clipboard attached to our leg) to have an easy way to copy clearances or remember frequencies! I used the oldschool one (pictured first), but now many pilots use iPads and tablets, so I’ve also added a kneeboard with iPad holder (pictured second).
Pilots use flashlights when they do the exterior inspection of the airplane! Especially when it’s dark, but also during daylight when they check dark places like the landing gear wheel well!
8. Pilot Watch – Avi-8 Hawker Hurricane
No, you don’t really need a Rolex or Breitling to fly a plane (even though they are really nice watches!) All you need is something that tells you the time. One of my favourite pilot watch brands is Avi-8. They have many different types and colors. This piece is called the Hawker Hurricane and suits well with the pilot uniform!
When working, pilots always bring their passport and licence with them. It’s nice to keep your legal documents all in one organised holder, so when you need it for a security check, you have it all ready!
10. Pilot Logbook: Jeppesen Professional Pilot Logbook
Pilots keep a log of all their flight hours. There are many apps that do this, but I prefer the oldschool way of writing it down in these Jeppesen Logbooks. I already have two of them filled with thousands of flights, hoping to fill many more!
